Description

Okay, I swear this'll be the last vampire-centric piece for a while. I just can't get enough of these guys.

NOTE: This character only exists in the Vampire Timeline and does not exist in the main Crisis-Comics continuity.

Biography:
Formed after the end of the Vy'Ell War (which ended with the aliens' portal being destroyed and the survivors banished to the Earth's oceans), the Night Watch was created in 1993 to keep the peace in vampire-controlled cities. This was the government's way of assuring the human population of their safety, and protecting them from being preyed upon by the more diabolical members of their breed.

During the day, the Night Watch is only called in to deal with problems that no ordinary human officer can take care of, but don't require the military to step in. Be it a rampaging superhuman, rogue terrorists, or even a riot that's been lasting for days, the Night Watch is always the perfect option with which to pick them apart without too much bloodshed. However, they are not, repeat, not suited for detective work- just another muscle of the local police force, paid for by everyday taxpayers.

During the night, however, the Night Watch earns its name by prowling the streets and dark alleyways for potential rogue vampires that could be attempting to feast on human blood. Every officer has a block of their own to protect, and the authority to "dust" any bloodsucker that acts outside the law- if they don't surrender, that is. And because nobody really knows where they are until they spring into action, some civilians are more scared of the officers themselves instead of the actual criminals.

Despite being seen by some as an example of "fascist" measures used to keep vampires in check, or even a way for the undead creatures to consolidate their hold over humanity, the Night Watch are held to the same basic ethical standards as any other police force. And
the only  requirement to join (aside from a basic background check and job interview) is that all officers much be at least 50% vampire, as determined by a basic DNA test. Anybody with a smaller percentage is legally considered human, and is not eligible for recruitment.

Powers/Equipment:
One of the main reasons the Night Watch is an integral part of the modern police force is because of the vast array of powers that they wield in the struggle against the criminal element.

-Enhanced Strength
Capable of bench-pressing a literal ton with ease, the Night Watch officers are tough to match when it comes to striking power. Their fists can splinter bone with a single punch.
-Enhanced Speed
While they don't possess truly superhuman speed, vampires are indeed faster than even the most athletic human. They can reach speeds of up to 40 mph on foot, and their reaction times are enhanced to the point that they can dodge bullets with enough practice. And in the Night Watch, this speed helps them to react quickly in spite of their bulky armor.
-Enhanced Durability
Night Watch officers are an incredibly hardy sort, even without their armor. Even a normal vampire can survive being hit by a car, or a fall of three or four stories without too many ill effects, thanks mostly to their regeneration.
-Healing Factor
Able to recover from wounds that would normally be fatal to an ordinary human (save for injuries dealt to the heart), and heal them within minutes of being dealt- though their ability to do so is proportional to the blood they've already consumed. A fully-fed vampire can regenerate their entire face if need be, but limbs are only possible if the bones are still attached. Otherwise they're lost for good.
-Mind Control
An unusual power in its own right, the ability to control lesser minds is a useful tool in the Night Watch's line of work. When they use this power, the eyes of their masks glow bright red as the target's brain gets very numb as they wait for direct orders. Usually the effect is instantaneous, taking effect as soon as the two entities make eye contact- but the Night Watch officer has to make his orders clear and concise enough so as to not be misinterpreted. This power only works on humans- vampire minds are too complex and powerful to be affected... though psychoactive drugs might weaken their tolerance considerably.
-Draw/Digest Blood
Their main source of energy, the Night Watch Officers are supplied rations of human blood that grant them access to their extraordinary powers, which they keep on their person within flasks that can hold an entire pint. It is possible to draw blood from civilians, but risking their vampirization by doing so is an offense punishable by at least ten years in prison.
-Vampirize Others:
Another power of the Night Watch by way of their nature is the ability to convert ordinary humans into fully-fledged vampires by biting their necks. Very few people really understand how it works (whether by saliva or a colorless venom that enters the bloodstream like a snake), but their fangs trigger an unearthly mutation, reconstructing the victim's DNA from the ground-up as the effect ripples through their body. Some say there are supernatural elements to this change, others prefer to think that it's completely natural. But in any case, the act of turning someone into a vampire against their will is strictly forbidden- especially for officers of the law such as the Night Watch.
-Sunlight Resistance (Dhampirs only)
Half-Vampires that join the Night Watch are sometimes noted for their ability to operate effectively without a suit in direct sunlight, which sometimes lands them "Dawn/Dusk Shifts", where the rising and setting of the sun usually results in a severe lack of human or vampire officers on the beat- making Dhampirs the perfect choices to serve during the interim.
-Turn to Mist
By letting their bodies relax to an extreme degree, vampires can change their entire bodies into a cloud of mist that can be guided by air currents and reform itself in a completely new location. While in this form, they are impervious to attack and keep their clothes and most small objects with them, but they cannot attack anyone either. Night Watch officers cannot use this ability while armored up, due to the process resulting in them losing their armor and becoming extremely vulnerable.
-Density Control
For some strange reason, the biological properties of a vampire's density differs with humans, despite being made of the same type of bone and flesh. By subtly affecting their density with the same process they use to turn into mist, a vampire can become light as a feather, which is ideal for concealing their footsteps, floating on water, climbing walls, and not setting off pressure-sensitive triggers.
-Cold Blooded
Unlike warm-blooded humans, vampires possess a unique form of homeostasis which allows them to operate independently of changes in temperature. Their entire bodies will always be just as hot or cold as their surroundings, which sounds harmless in theory... until one realizes that without any way to maintain a stable, consistent temperature, vampires are at serious risk during the winter, when the blood can literally freeze in their veins and immobilize them completely. On the positive side, this allows the Night Watch to wear their bulky armor without any fears of sweating or discomfort (something no normal human could survive without a steady supply of water and coolant), and also renders them invisible on the infrared spectrum.

The Night Watch officers also possess a variety of equipment useful for keeping the peace, since they often need to show restraint in the eye of the public.
-Stun Arsenal
When called in to deal with unruly crowds or superhuman menaces, the Night Watch members are usually given titanium/plexiglass riot shields, as well as tear gas canisters, and shock batons capable of discharging at least 7 kilovolts of electricity. The rubber gloves and airtight plastic suits also help protect the officers from being harmed by their own weapons, in case things really get out of hand.
-Lethal Force
If they are ordered to kill, the Night Watch are equipped with "sun guns" and "sun grenades" that emit flashes of solar radiation powerful enough to kill pure vampires, while only giving humans a painful sunburn. Their method of dealing with powerful threats comes in two steps: 1) Offer a single chance to surrender, and 2) Dust anyone that refuses that offer. They take their jobs and related threats very seriously.
-Plastic Armor
The Night Watch are also equipped with bulletproof plastic armor that has their symbol emblazoned on their biceps and chest, as well as an airtight seal for preventing sunlight and tear gas from harming the officers within. Every officer has their own suit (with male and female variants) which they are required to maintain and take care of, but they are also allowed to decorate their personal armor, as long as the modifications are within regulations.
